Al-fatihah....

*excerpt from Utusan Online*

'KUALA LUMPUR 26 Feb. - Seniwati veteran, Datin Saadiah, meninggal dunia di rumahnya di Taman Melawati di sini tengah hari ini setelah mengalami sesak nafas. Beliau berusia 68 tahun...' to read further go to Utusan Online in the 'Links' section.

Another one of the brightest gems that ever decorated the film industry has passed on. I'll always remember her acting in movies such as 'Musang Berjanggut' and 'Sarjan Hassan' alongside the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

Semoga Allah mencucuri rahmat ke atas rohnya....

Amin.

We demand justice!!!

Remember what I said abt the SSM6 briefing? The one that was cancelled? Apparently the GEP (Graduate Entry Programme) students had theirs after the PPD exam. Due to the large number of the ppl in my year (Undergraduates + GEPs), the GEPs had their exam at Barts, and the UGs at Mile End. AND THEY GOT THEIR BRIEFING!! Us UGs, sat in the lecture hall waiting like fools for almost an hour (well okla, some of the students did behave like fools after a while, but that's besides the point..). The point is we didn't get our briefing! And SSM6 is week after next!

I do realize that the GEPs are technically one year behind us (they did 1st and 2nd year syllabus within a year) in terms of seniority in the course, and the UGs are better during Comm. skills sessions as well as clinical skills, due to the fact that we practiced just too many times (for exams and firms and such) but there's no need for preferential treatment! These ppl are graduates, for goodness' sakes, they're definitely more mature and more knowledgeable than all of the UGs put together despite their number (although I must say, us UGs have acquired the skill of manipulating the minutest knowledge we have and seeming very impressive when we talk about random nonsense....hmm I'm not putting my case forth very well, am I?)

The bottom line is : UG or GEP, we deserve to be treated equally. Although on the grounds of maturity and knowledge, UGs are at a disadvantage. And in terms of knowing their way around med school the GEPs often feel a bit separated from the rest of us students. But hey, these differences shouldn't be the justification for differential treatment.

That's my two cents' worth of opinion.

It's Friday!! (Well, actually, it'll soon be over....)

Main news of the day : The PPD exam is over!!!!! (well okla, berita dah basi since it's already past 11 pm, and it was approx. 12hours ago since I handed the answer sheet to the examiner). BUT, the main thing is that it is over..

After the exam, at abt12.30 pm, all of us were supposed to have an SSM 6 briefing at the Medical School building at Mile End. Hadn't stepped foot into the building ever since 3rd year started (we don't have lectures there anymore, we're based at hospitals now) so agak nostalgia jugak la....

So there we were, abt almost 200 odd of us in the lecture theatre, waiting for whoever who's supposed to talk to us. The theatre was quite noisy when I entered, tp standard la tu, usual amt of noise. After 15 minutes or so, the crowd started to get rowdy...at least ppl at the back la. They started throwing paper balls to each other, at first....and soon enough to the rest in the lecture hall. Got hit by them twice, but I thought I'd just maintain my dignity and continued reading the MAD magazine I picked up on the way. Like, hello??? Just how old are these people? Ten?? And people's lives are supposed to be in their hands in 2 and a half years' time when they graduate medical school.

After abt almost 1 hour of sitting there with the rowdy crowd, someone came up to the front and said that the talk was cancelled. Apparently it was cancelled ages ago, and they didn't even inform us.

That's my medical school for you.

Before I post this, just like to share with you something I read in the MAD mag, I quite like it. I SO relate to many of the things mentioned...read on and you'll understand....

MEDICAL SICKNESS
-> Students are a sick lot. Start-of-term flu, food poisoning, delirium tremens : these are only some of the starters. You may be shocked at how many of the following you can recognise:

Indefinitely worn-out syndrome
An endemic problem cause by the 'work hard and play even harder' bug. Characteristic features are : persistent yawning, zombie-like gait, blood shot or glazed eyes and a state of mild confusion. These symptoms may be temporarily alleviated by a teaching-free day or an unexpected lecture cancellation.
**this is me most of the time, except for the 'work hard' part...

Cannotbebotheredism
This describes a sensation of general laziness. There is no desire to feel motivated or enthusiastic about anything. It may cause feelings of guilt in some but usually nothing is done about it.
**yup, I SO know what you mean.....

Phantom brain
An acute phenomenon which can occur when the student is singled out (by a lecturer or a doctor on their firm) to answer a question. It is often described as the mind going blank and there is a failure to feel any connection to the brain even though the head is still securely attached.
**been there, done that

Memoryitis
Caused by irritation of the memory by overly complex theories or excessive number of new words and other forms of information overload. There is failure to recall pre-learnt concepts correctly and new information is not retained

Pre-exam anxiety attack
This can be brought on by the (usually) unfounded belief that not enough work has been done over the past year and there are grossly axaggerated feelings of inevitable doomed failure. Very serious cases may be accompanied by a compulsive need to learn and recite the whole of Kumar and Clark - backwards

Post-results mania
Easily identified by high-pitched squealing and emotional group hugging. Symptoms tend to be more overt amongst females
**Aaaa...yang ni, saya tak buat ye...

Paranoid self-diagnosing disorder
In this, the student becomes increasingly convinced that they have all the symptoms of a disease described by the text that they are reading and so conclude that they must be seriously ill andwill not survive till finals. This is usually not the case
**THIS one I'm very familiar with. Expecially during 2nd year when I was doing Cardiorespiratory ("I think I need a pacemaker..."), Metabolism ("Hypothyroidism..better get my thyroid functions tested."), Locomotor ("Great. Osteoarthritis for me for sure.."), Human Development (Dx of abt every gynaecological problem, except pregnancy aaa...), and last but not least, Brain and Behaviour module (from bipolar disorder to chronic depression to epilepsy to schizophrenia...I've diagnosed myself with them all..)

Right, roger and out!!

Counting Crows : Accidentally In Love

Yay! After numerous attempts, finally managed to play this song properly on the page...Well actually, got it right the first time, didn't realize it wouldn't play because of my browser settings.

Neways I LOVE this song! Shrek 2 is definitely a worthy sequel!!

(*mutters to self* : Ookay Hani, enough...go back to studying...)

4 a.m. and still awake....

*yawn*...

PPD exams on Friday (dun ask me what PPD is, I can't for the life of me remember at this crazy hour).

Been going through lecture notes on Epidemiology & Public Health..and Ethics. To tell the truth, I find it quite interesting. Not for exams purposes, of course. Most of the materials from the lectures seem new to me, due to the fact that I sleep during lectures (can't help it!! I try so hard to stay awake! I swear!!).

Starting to merepek again. Neways I'm soooo looking forward to getting Friday over and done with. Then I can go back to my life of idleness...well actually, there are 3 books I just bought that I'm dying to read - Princess Bride, Da Vinci Code Undecoded and the Rough Guide to Da Vinci Code (notice how other things seem more interesting than what you're supposed to do, namely studying).

Why am I jumping from one topic to another? (can't help thinking of an animal that swings from tree to tree). I can't even remember what I meant to write about in the first place.

Oh well.....*yawn*

Hmm....

Before we go anywhere else, there are a few things you should know:

1) I'm not really one to share my innermost thoughts with anyone (yeah yeah, how many times have we heard that before?), but, like everyone else, I'm intrigued by the idea of publishing them in the virtual world. Besides, I promised a certain someone I'd put a blog up, just to keep the both of us amused, and well, so here I am.

2) I tend to go off on a tangent ever so often, so chances are whatever you'd read would make no sense to neither you nor me.

3) I love to avoid doing things I'm supposed to do sometimes, which explains why I'm setting up a blog when my exam's on Friday (masochistic tendencies are suspected).

4) Since I'm doing this kind of in a hush-hush way (no, I wasn't planning to advertise to ppl I know the fact I have a blog...I'm just doing this for fun, not like I'm planning it to be on the scale of Anne Frank's diary), I wonder how many ppl would actually stumble upon this page? Whoever is reading this, let me know...I'll treat you to dinner..all you can eat...

Nah, I'm not THAT generous.

Can feel my guilty conscience coming. Didn't think it would still work on me. Gotta study. Watch this space.
